SKILL 1: ANSWER MAIN IDEA QUESTIONS CORRECTLY

What is the “primary purpose?”
The passage or the author is “primarily concerned with” what?
Which answer “best summarizes the central idea?”
Which answer “states the main idea?”
What is the “central purpose?”

A question can also be limited to only part of the passage: you might be asked, for example, to find the primary purpose of the second paragraph. If the question limits the scope to something more narrow than the entire passage, be very careful as you review the answers.
